Bridger Bowl Ski Area

 The mountains of Montana abound with world class skiing, one of the best easily being Bridger Bowl Ski Area just fifteen miles north of Bozeman. So close to an urban center, one might think that Bridger Bowl would be just another one of the over-hyped commercial hot-spots that specializes more in cutesy shopping destinations than in skiing. This, however, is not the case. Bridger Bowl skiing is some of the best in the northwestern United States, with a reputation for heavy snowfall but light snow.  Known for wonderfully varied terrain covered by tons of fluffy, glittering powder, Bridger Bowl Ski Area is truly a great location to experience the beauty and fun of mountain sports.

   Bridger Bowl Ski Area has come a long way from its humble beginnings. It was purchased by the State of Montana in 1949 as a 120 acre access point to the Gallatin National Forest. Soon, a proposed state park and ski area began to take shape when a rope-tow was constructed in 1951. Poor planning and a few bad seasons meant an undeveloped area, until the Bozeman State Park and Recreation Association was founded in 1954, opening the way to what is now known as Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Now, the ski area has expanded from its original 120 acres to 1500 skiable acres, with a vertical rise of 2,600 feet and 71 different trails serviced by four double, two triple, and one quad lift.

  Access to this ski haven is much more inexpensive than one might expect from its size and the quality of its terrain. Adults pay just $41 for a full day pass, or $33 for a half day which extends from 12:30pm to close at 4:00pm. For those staying in Bozeman or Bridger for an extended period of time, discounts are offered for Adults at $38 a day for a three day pass. Children ski for just $15, and seniors, above 72 years (and children under five) ski free. For the dedicated skier or Bozeman resident, season passes are available in a variety of forms. For unlimited access for adults, passes are $520 if purchased prior to October tenth, and $595 if purchased after this date. A Junior Pass for those of ages 13-18 years old is available at $320 (before Oct. 10th, $395 after). Other options include a Mid-Week pass which is good Monday through Friday throughout the season for a discounted price of $335 ($435 after Oct. 10th) and the Children’s Pass which is priced at $130 ($185 after Oct. 10th).

   Bridger Bowl Skiing and Ski Area are not your typical winter sports destination. The staff and locals are friendly and love to make newcomers feel welcome. One of the ways that they do so is by means of their free mountain orientation tours which take place daily at 10am. Tour guides are familiar with every aspect of Bridger Bowl, and will help you get your bearings. For example the BridgerBowl Terrain Park, one of the best in the area, isn’t on the main drag. This notwithstanding, the smooth, high flying jumps and half pipes attract some of the most avid park rats in the northwest. For those with children, or for those who just want to improve their skill, a snow sports school is offered at Bridger Bowl.

  It is easy to find something to do all year round at Bridger Bowl, even during summer. With hiking, biking, and sightseeing throughout the beautiful forests of the area, Bridger Bowl is a great outdoor destination during any season.
